Cruise Ship Hits Sand Bar in Italy

Off the coast of the Italian island of Giglio, a cruise ship hits the sandbar and began to roll. There were 4,000 passengers and crew on board and up until now there have been 3 casualties and 70 people are still missing.

Rescue workers are doing their best to search for the missing passengers through the decks of the moderately sunken ship. The Italian authorities say that there’s a chance that less than 70 people are missing and that they could be on the island due to the turmoil of rescue.

While passengers were sitting down for dinner, the ship hit a sand bar and tore a 30-meter opening in its hull. The lights on the ship went out which caused terror as the ship started to list to one side.

Italian authorities say that most passengers evacuated the ship by lifeboat or helicopter. Others entered in a panic-mode jumped into the ice-cold water as the ship began to sink. Most of those who jumped were actually crew members.

The rescued passengers were put up in schools, churches and homes the night before they were taken to mainland. There were about 1,000 Italian passengers, 500 German passengers and about 200 French passengers, says the Italian authorities. They didn’t give any details about the rest of the passengers.
