We all need vitamins and we get them from fruits, vegetables, basically from what we eat and drink. It’s never good to take too much of something and it also applies to vitamins. A recent study reveals that taking too much vitamins is linked to a higher death rate among older women.
This wasn’t a surprise to the researchers because they suspected for quite a while now that vitamin supplements are beneficial to people who lack these nutrients. Extreme amounts of them might even harm the person taking them. Multivitamins, folic acid, vitamin B6, magnesium, zinc, copper and iron in particular appeared to increase mortality risk.
The less vitamins you take, the better it is for you. Researchers did a study which reveals that iron tablets were strongly linked with a small (2.4%) increased death risk, as were many other supplements. The link with iron was dose-dependent, meaning the more of it the individual took, the higher their risk was.
On the other hand, calcium supplements appeared to lower death risk and vitamin D is suggested to be taken by people over 65 years of age. However the researchers believe that one mustn’t take calcium supplements unless its advised by a doctor.
If you’re on a healthy and balanced diet, you’ll be able to get all the vitamins and minerals that your body needs. The fact remains that taking to much of most of these supplements can be toxic therefore it’s better to take them only if recommended by a doctor.
