Miami is currently fighting the invasion of an illegal alien, the Giant African Snails or Achatina fulica. These snails are one of the most dangerous land snails on the planet and since 1966 it’s the third time they’ve invaded the city of Miami. Currently, Miami authorities face time-spilling and rather expensive fight against these bugs.
These giant bugs can get up to 25 cm (10 in) long and 10 cm (4 in) wide. They eat at least 500 different types of plants and lay about 1,200 eggs a year. According to the authorities, in the past week, about 1,000 of these giants have been found. On top of that, these snails can also carry a non-fatal strain of meningitis.
Back in 1966 when the city faced an invasion of these snails, it was because a boy brought a few from Hawaii and months later they were 18,000 eating crops of farms. The removal of the bugs cost the city around 1 million dollars. In the current situation, they suspect that a man smuggled the snails into the country. The man, practiced the traditional African religion namely, Ifa Orisha, and offered his followers snail juice to drink. This ritual made several of his followers ill.
