Gender X in Australian Passports

Australian passports will now have three gender options: male, female and indeterminate. The government issued a statement where they explained that adding the new gender X will remove discrimination against  transgender and intersex people.

I’m sure at least some of you have been in a situation where you would say, excuse me sir, ma’am? sir? This happens especially when you encounter a transgender man going to the process of transformation. He dresses like a woman, but sounds and looks like a drag queen.

The third category, X are for ‘intersex people, those who aren’t entirely a male or female. Transgender people, those who are completely transformed into the gender they identify themselves as will be able to choose either male or female, not X. However, their choice must be supported by a doctor’s statement in order for it to be approved.

In the US, people were not allowed to change their gender on their passports without a full sex-change operation. This rule was dropped in 2010. About 4% of people are born with gender abnormalities such as hormonal imbalances, chromosomal abnormalities (XXY) and so forth. These disorders don’t make them appear the gender they are or feel like. Therefore gender X should be comfort to those people, especially when going through airport security.

Great Britain is also considering adding gender X to their passports.

About Nicole Hawker

My favorite things to do is swimming, playing tennis and watch movies, TV shows and documentaries. I like to be aware of what's happening in the world and I have to admit that I'll never understand politicians. I design and build information systems for a living. The job pays well however it gets quite tiresome sometimes. I discovered two years ago that I have some kind of passion for writing so in 2010 I started this blog in hope that people will share a piece of their mind.
