China – Knockoff Industry

Do you need a cheaper iPhone, PC, even a van Gogh painting? China is the answer! I buy a lot of stuff from China and I personally have no complaint whatsoever. Well….There is one online store, “best offer buy” that ripped me off, but other than them, I have had no troubles at all. A couple of friends also got ripped off but in their case, they didn’t pay with paypal.

It’s very important to pay through an online intermediary payment system (or bank) such as paypal, AlertPay and MoneyBookers because they keep records of every purchase. So if the store where you bought items decides to rip you off, you have proof with Paypal or whatever other company of payment so that you can get a refund.

The knockoff industry in China has grown exponentially. What many people don’t know is that a lot of the “knockoffs” aren’t knockoffs. Yes, a lot aren’t! Allow me to explain. The 2,000 dollars Gucci bags you buy at the store, once upon a time was worth $50 or less.

Almost everything is made in China, even Gucci bags, Versace shoes, Fendi belts and Prada shades to mention a few. These companies pay the Chinese very little money for manufacturing these products compared to what they sell in retail stores. Some of the knockoffs they sell aren’t knockoffs because they deliver less products that the manufactured, let’s say they deliver 75% of the production to Gucci and sell the rest in their own market. That’s why sometimes people can’t tell the difference between knockoffs and original stuff.

The men and women working in these factories are paid less than a dollar a day and on top of that the live in the harshest conditions regarding the air they breathe and water they drink are al heavily polluted. Some of them won’t even reach the age of 60 if continued in this awful environment.

While I was in China in 2008, I came to understand why the Chinese make knockoffs of everything. It’s the way they make their money.  They don’t earn much by making the stuff for other companies, they make their money by making the knockoffs and selling the stuff they keep. Little as the money may seem, it is what grew and is still growing their economy to be number two in the world. Soon they will be number one without a doubt.

Currently the largest money making industry in China is the cell phone industry. They make these great blackberries, iPhone, HTC and LG knockoffs and you can put two SIM cards in one cell phone. Each of these numbers has their own physical address namely IMEI number. The phones have radio, TV, Internet connectivity, FB, Twitter, basically all the functionality the originals have however the OS is a cheaper version.

I of many people that buy their furniture directly from China instead of going to a furniture store here in the US. Others buy computer parts, toys, video gaming stuff, cars, home appliances, office supplies and even clothing. A friend buy A&F shirts from China for her twins and pays less than $10 per shirt. She does it because kids grow fast and there’s no need to pay so much on their clothes. Makes sense! People save a great deal of cash (especially in today’s economy) and now I do too!
