Just like all electronic devices, cell phones emit radiation. There is still an ongoing debate within the scientific community whether cell phones may cause brain tumors or even brain cancer.
Not too long ago, a man filed a lawsuit against the cell phone industry due to the death of her wife was because a brain tumor caused by the frequent use of her cell phone. The claim was dismissed from the court due to lack of evidence. However this lawsuit caused a tremendous amount of research to reach an accurate conclusion.
So, are cell phones safe?
There are many answers for this question, however lets first look at the facts. Brain cancer is up 25% since cell phones became popular. Many cell phone users aren’t really aware of the electromagnetic waves cell phones transmit into their brains. As much as 60 percent of the microwave radiation from cell phones is absorbed in our brains depending on how close the antenna is.
A few years ago the UK did a four-year study of brain cancer patients and found there is no increased risk of the illness traceable to the use of cell phones. The London’s Institute of Cancer Research and three major British universities conducted the study on 966 brain cancer patients. The results were “there was no relationship for risk of glioma (brain cancer) and time since first use of a mobile phone, lifetime years of use and cumulative number of calls and hours of use.”
Last night on AC 360, Dr. Sanjay Gupta had a report on the effects of cell phones in the brain and our health. Long story short, after extensive research scientists discovered that mobile phones are more harmful than expected, especially on children. Check the below picture.
You can clearly see the effects the microwave radiation has on the brain and the younger the person, the larger it will spread onto the brain.
Here are some tips:
- – Don’t let children use cell phones unless it’s a life and death situation.
- - If you’re in a call with bad signal, hang up as the mobile phone will transmit even more radiation to preserve the connection.
- - At night, turn off your cell phone since you actually won’t be using it when you’re sleeping.
- - Use safe wireless devices as a way to keep the phone as far away as possible from your body. (Bluetooth devices are safe to some extent, however not the safest method as it also emits radiation.)
- - Keep your cell phone in your bag or satchel instead of in your pockets .Just keep it away from your body.
- - If possible use landline phones instead of your cell phones.
It’s only fair to say that it is principally too early to predict the impact of such a young product since it’s only two decades old. Some scientists believe that cell phones are as bad as Gasoline, Asbestos and Smoking. In time when enough research has been done, we’ll know for certain. Nevertheless I believe that cell phones do some kind of damage to the brain.
Update: It’s official now, cell phones definitely may cause cancer!
