A victim of sex assault is suing the dating site match.com for not doing background checks on its users. After going out with a man she met on the site for the second time, the woman was sexually assaulted by him after coming out of the restroom in her apartment. After calling the police, she found out that this man happened to have a history of sexual assaults.
The victim in this case isn’t suing the online site for compensation, but she’s trying to change the way the site is handling or not handling the security of its users.
Match.com is a very successful online dating site with over 3 million American users, doesn’t screen the people when they join their network. This creates a perfect ambience for sexual predators, child molesters, and whatever other sick-minded individuals.
Match.com recently announced that it will begin checking users against sex offender databases in the next three months. This of course is just a step towards the solution nevertheless not enough. The site can easily outsource this important task to a company or companies that specialize in this area.
Until the site is fairly safe, I would advise you to be very cautious and maybe do an online check on the person you’re planning to meet or go out with. You never know what’s out there and it’s better to be safe than sorry.
