Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy by elimination of a fetus or an embryo from the uterus resulting in its death. It can be defined as pregnancy termination accidentally as in a miscarriage or by choice. Over 50% of women getting an abortion are below the age of 25. Over 60% of abortions are done by never married women. This decision isn’t as easy as it may seem. Most women tend to carefully think about it weighing the pros and cons for a considerable amount of time before they make a final choice.
On January 22nd of 1973, the United States Supreme Court decided in the case Roe v. Wade to make abortion in the United States legal in every state. In the states where abortion is legal, it was established that a woman has a right to self-determination covering the decision whether or not to carry a pregnancy to term, however this right must be balanced against a state’s significance in preserving fetal life.
Currently in the 21st Century in thirty States abortions are banned. In four states abortion is legal on request. Only in one state, abortion is legal in case of rape. In only two states abortion is legal in case of danger to a woman’s health. And in thirteen states, abortion is legal in case of danger to a woman’s health, rape or incest, or damaged fetus.
Most people are against abortion and almost all of them are conservatives. But why? What are their arguments? Some conservatives believe that abortions should be done for medical reasons alone. The republicans describe their beliefs as pro-life. This is mainly due to their Christian beliefs as the Christians around the globe have the biggest movement of pro-life (against abortion). Ironically most of the conservatives and republicans are pro death penalty. So much for pro-life!
The rationalization they use against the death row criminals is that they are scum who killed, raped or whatever. They deserve to be punished and death penalty is the best way to punish them. Really? Really? You just took them out of their suffering. What punishment? They didn’t pay for nothing! They just stayed in prison for 10 years or so instead of life. Basically you’re liberating them from their real punishment which is never ever again getting out of prison. On the other hand they are wasting the tax-payers money by keeping them alive so there’s definitely 2 sides of a coin.
Why be pro-abortion?
If a woman has been raped and got pregnant, does she not have the right to abort the fetus? Most politicians are men so it’s more likely that they can’t really understand what carrying an unwanted child means. Your body is going through many changes and uneasiness as well. So I propose for you against abortion to think about ‘What if my daughter was raped and impregnated by a criminal rapist?’ Would you want your grandchild to be born and raise him/her? Or do you allow your grandchild to be born and put him up for adoption? Or do you grand your daughter her wish to abort the fetus?
Let’s face it, who in their right mind would want to carry an unwanted child of an obviously sick criminal rapist that you probably don’t know sh!t about? Who is to tell that the child will take after your daughter?
What about the sick fathers that rape their own daughters? It’s scientifically proven that an incestuous born baby have a higher probability of congenital birth-defects. Is it fair to the child? Is it fair to the mother? Let’s face it the father would be spending a while in prison. Why bring a child into the world that probably will have a disability and on top of all you won’t be able to afford the special caring he or she needs. Besides that the mother doesn’t have the qualifications to provide the child the appriopriate care either. So basically, this child would live a life to simply draw breath. Is this fair?
What about all the teenagers under the age of eighteen ending up pregnant because of the lack of sexual information, or no home supervision, no father in the picture, minority of low income and with mothers that work almost 24/7 to support them?
It’s an obvious vicious circle (especially among minorities) that needs and end. Sixteen year old ends up pregnant, doesn’t have the means for an abortion or probably knows the horrors adoption children go through so she decides to keep the baby. She quits school, starts working for the minimum income. Naturally the income isn’t enough since she’s paying more on taxes than billionaire corporations and the top 1% of the country. The child will probably be raised by her grandmother, or daycare people, or some family members because the mother has to work full time and has little time left to be with her child. Child starts to get older and let’s face it; her mother has her best interest not those raising her so she starts hanging out with people from the streets (boys). Before you know it, she’s pregnant and the cycle starts all over again.
Several girls end up being pregnant because of a single moment of passion. They don’t think about protection in the moment of conception. I wonder what the parents will do for their teenage daughter if they can’t afford to raise her baby.
Imagine if there weren’t abortions performed in the past 40 years. Do you have any idea how many children would’ve been born? Imagine how many of those children would’ve had a real chance? Imagine how many of those women (without a college degree) would’ve most likely ruined their life.
In the documentary “Freakonomics”, economist researchers found a link between abortions and crime rates. In the nineties, crime dropped drastically (between 50 to 60%) and the economy was strong as well. The economists determined that half of the drop was due to more imprisoned criminals, changes in the crack cocaine market, gun controls, strong economy and police increase. The other half is due to the abortion law implemented in 1973. A whole generation of unwanted children wasn’t born therefore there will be less crime after 15 to 20 years.
I believe that every human being has a right to a quality life. Though there are a lot of people opting for adoption nowadays, adopting a kid is never the same as having your flesh and blood (especially if you are capable of having your own). Some may say otherwise, but you and I both know that it’s not true. Of course it’s better than growing up in a foster home but a large portion of unwanted children in these homes that will never get a chance to be adopted. This is the reason why most aren’t adopting unless you’re Angelina Jolie! It’s a fact that they are the ones with a higher probability of not getting into college and wind up either being the bottom-feeders in job markets or ending up in gangs.
Why be against abortion?
There are actually little scientific facts to be absolutely against abortion in general. These facts apply depending to the individual who’s planning for an abortion.
There are groups of women who may be at higher risk of coping with problems and distress following abortion. Some of these factors are, emotional attachment to the pregnancy, lack of social support, pre-existing psychiatric illness, conservative views on abortion, religious views, and depression increase the likelihood of experiencing negative feelings after an abortion.
Infection, sepsis, recurrent miscarriages and rarely death could be the complications of abortions. However these are more likely to occur in the States where abortions aren’t legal and women take other resort to get rid of the fetus. For instance, like an illegal underground clinic or a licensed nurse who wants to make some extra cash on the side at a remote location perhaps? Who knows? Concerning illegal things people can be quite creative.
The choice for adoption as an alternative to abortion would give the fetus the right to life. He or she may have a chance be adopted by a family that will provide good care for him or her.
Opinion
I deeply believe that a woman depending on her situation financially, socially and mentally has the right to decide within the first three months of her pregnancy whether to keep the baby or not. After three months she might as well keep the baby because if she really didn’t want it, she would’ve got rid of it within the first week she found out that she was pregnant. When I make judgments on a problem or situation, I tend to put myself in that particular situation and ask myself ‘If it were me what would I do?’
Abortions should be legalized worldwide. Without it being legal in most countries unless it’s because of rape or incest, people are doing it anyways. Abortions aren’t something new of the 20th century, it existed long before that.
Abortions contribute to a better society, as the numbers of unwanted children will plummet. Kids today are starting to have sex at a much early age than their parents. Birth control pills are sold to kids above 18 year old and they require a doctor’s prescription as well. There is no legal age to buy condoms, but it seems like people don’t use them, plus they tend to break once in awhile. If you weigh the pros and cons, pro-abortion factors win by a mile.
