Off the coast of China, Dalian City, over 23 tons of oil eating bacteria are being poured in to the water to clean up the spill. This is happening four days after pipelines exploded near one of China’s major oil reserve bases. This is the first time that China has made major use of bio-technology to solve an environmental pollution issue.
Even though oil fences are being used to avoid the spill from dispersing, many are concerned the condition may worsen if wind blows or rain falls. If the crude-oil slick is too thick, the chemical oil-dispersant may not work. The oil eating bacteria, unlike the chemical oil-dispersant is environment friendly.
